Prior to reading the book, I had watched the amazing film adaptation directed by the great Sam Mendes and starring Tom Hanks in the role of Michael Jr’s father. As the events in the book are all told from the perspective of Michael Jr, it allows the author the ability to show Michael’s father in a more intimate and personal way, through his caring relationship with his family. It’s a deep and powerfully told story that works on many different levels. After a shocking and violent event shakes both his and his father’s lives, they hit the road on a mission of revenge, redemption and ultimately salvation.
